About Us
Our mission is to help at-risk boys and girls develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Boys & Girls Clubs of Hancock County (BGCHC) provides a safe haven, adult role models, and a variety of programs that support the educational, emotional, physical, and social development of youth, without regard to social, racial, ethnic, or religious background.
We serve over 4,000 children and teens, ages 5 to 18, in our Clubs, and through our programs and partnerships. Our approach focuses on five core initiatives: Arts; Education (and Technology); Leadership; Life Skills; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
Our Clubs in Hancock County reflect the communities in which they are located. Some are free-standing facilities; some share space with middle and elementary schools. It is not the type of building that makes them Clubs, but the quality of the staff and the effectiveness of the programs that take place within them. Our 2 Clubs are located in Greenfield and Shirley.

What is the BGCHC
Boys and Girls Clubs of Hancock County. . . What are they?
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hancock County is a non-profit organization for youth 5 to 18 years of age. The mission of The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hancock County is a youth development organization providing a positive environment, which seeks to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. This organization provides diversified activities that meet the interests of all youth. Programs engage youth in activities with adults, peers and family members that enable youth to enhance self-esteem and to develop full potential. Based on physical, emotional, cultural and social needs and interests of youth, and recognizing developmental principles, the organization offers diversified program activities in five Core Program Areas: Character Development and Leadership Development . . . empowers youth to support and influence their center and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others' cultural identities. Education and Career Development . . . enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to optimize employability. Health and Life Skills . . . develops young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and develop the competencies to live successfully as self-sufficient adults. The Arts . . . enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of visual and tactile arts and crafts, performing arts and creative writing. Sports, Fitness and Recreation . . . develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.
All organization programs and services promote and enhance the development of youth by instilling the Youth Development Strategy: A Sense of Competence . . . the feeling there is something youth can do and do well. A Sense of Usefulness . . . the opportunity to do something of value for other people. A Sense of Belonging . . . a setting where an individual knows he/she has a place and where he/she "fits" and is accepted. A Sense of Power or Influence . . . a chance to be heard and to influence decisions. When this strategy is fully implemented, the self-esteem of youth is enhanced and an environment is created which helps them achieve their full potential.
The organization must engage youth in activities that are fun and enjoyable while supporting development of the Capacities Kids Need to Succeed: Positive Self-Identity . . . Youth have a healthy self-concept and a strong belief in their own self-worth. Youth have a sense of hope about their future; they are adept at setting and attaining goals. Youth have the confidence to pursue their dreams and goals and make the necessary decisions to achieve their life plans. Competence . . . Youth have the knowledge, skills, strategies and attitudes necessary to have a positive foundation for success. Youth become competent by mastering tasks and thus demonstrating to themselves that they can do things well. Youth need to develop competencies in the following areas: Educational: Youth are proficient in basic education disciplines and have the capacity to utilize technology. Youth have graduated from high school and are motivated to pursue learning opportunities throughout their lives.

in the work force. Social: Youth are able to develop and sustain positive relationships with others. Cultural: Youth have an understanding and respect for their own cultural identity and for the cultures of others; they are able to contribute in a multicultural society and demonstrate tolerance for differences among people. Community and Civic Involvement: Youth have a sense of belonging to their community, family, and/or group. and are willing to take civic responsibility. Youth work closely with others to contribute to the greater good. Health and Well-Being: Youth live healthy lifestyles, take part in regular fitness activities, are able to access health care resources and engage in positive behaviors. They are able to manage stress. They use sound judgment about personal safety, nutrition and avoidance of alcohol and other drugs and premature sexual activity. Moral Compass: Youth have values that enable them to develop positive relationships with others. These values include honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, a sense of justice and fairness, respect, caring and spirituality. This is accomplished through programs and in discussion between staff and members. The Boys and Girls Clubs cannot succeed without caring, capable staff who forge relationships with young people and influence their ability to achieve successful futures.
