Our Locations
Across our county, youth need safe places to spend after-school hours, caring adults who can serve as role models, and affordable programming that helps them gain confidence and acquire skills.
Our 2 Clubs in Greenfield and Shirley reflect the communities in which they are located. One is a free-standing facility; one shares space as a community center. It is not the type of building that makes them Clubs, but the quality of the staff and the effectiveness of the programs that take place within them.
The Boys and Girls Clubs membership fee of just $60 annually per child ($40 per teen) provides access to all age-appropriate programs and services offered by our Clubs.
Whom We Serve
In 2007, we served over 4,000 youth, ages 5 to 18. Just less than 1,000 are Club members; over 3,000 others are engaged through our programs, partnerships and events. Although there is no typical BGCHC member, here is a snapshot of the youth, families and communities we serve.

Communities:
The communities that BGCHC serves confront multiple and serious challenges including poverty, unemployment, prevalent crime, and high levels of substance abuse and addiction.
The following 2006 statistics from the Hancock County Probation Department prove why the BGHCC is needed (300 cases): 1 in 3 juvenile offenders are placed in "group" settings 3 out of 4 juvenile offenders are not employed 1 out of 4 juvenile offenders have been either expelled or suspended from school 50% recidivism rate of juvenile offenders committing severe offenses 33% recidivism rate of juvenile offenders committing major offenses 13% recidivism rate of juvenile offenders committing minor offenses
How they Benefit:
In Hancock County, children spend approximately 6 hours a day, 180 days a year in school fewer than 20% of their waking hours. Based on hours alone, out-of-school time presents a critical opportunity to help children meet their full potential.
With its widespread reach and comprehensive programming, BGCHC is well suited to help fill the gap and address this growing community need.
The positive impact of after-school programs is supported in numerous studies which show that students who participate in high-quality after-school programs, particularly those from lower socioeconomic levels, have better peer relations, emotional adjustments, and conduct in school compared to their peers who are not in programs.
Youth who participate in after-school programs also spend less time watching television, perform better academically, are more inclined to engage in positive extra-curricular activities, handle conflict better, and miss fewer days of school.
Recent research has also found that Boys and Girls Clubs, in particular, are extremely effective mechanisms to support positive youth development.
