Programs and Partnerships

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hancock County provides a safe haven, adult role models, and a variety of affordable and effective programs that support the educational, emotional, physical, and social development of youth, without regard to social, racial, ethnic, or religious background.

BGCHC leverages the expertise and resources of other organizations to broaden our reach and deepen our impact. Our newer reputation for quality program delivery has, in turn, made us a sought-after partner for organizations seeking to provide beneficial programs or services to children and teens.

Our Clubs offer programming in five core initiatives: Arts; Education (including technology); Leadership; Life Skills; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation - all of which aim to influence the positive, cognitive, social, emotional, physical and moral development of young people. These efforts provide youth with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to pursue their dreams and succeed in life. While each core program focuses on specific skills, it is the wide range of developmental opportunities and experiences that makes the Clubs unique and effective.  During the summer, we run a summer camp program for children ages 5 to 12 to ensure that youth maintain and further develop the skills and positive behaviors learned during the school year.

Five Core Program Areas:

Community Partnerships

Sports, Fitness and Recreation çThe Arts ç Health and Life Skills ç Education ç Character and Leadership Development

Collaborative. Innovative. Focused on Youth.

Throughout our history, BGCHC has leveraged the expertise and resources of other organizations to broaden our reach and deepen our impact. Our newfound reputation for outstanding program delivery has, in turn, made us a sought-after partner for organizations seeking to provide beneficial programs or services to children and teens.

BGCHC's partnerships, listed below, play a vital role in serving members, in leveraging resources for maximum impact, and in helping us develop effective citizens and leaders among the youth whom we serve.

Sports, Fitness, and Recreation

The Clubs’ sports, fitness and recreation activities help members encourage healthy habits, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills. Members participate in daily activities in the Clubs’ gymnasiums, social recreation areas and outdoor play spaces, and they gain skills through participation on sports teams and clubs.

The Arts

We recognize the lasting impact that arts education can have on children’s cognitive, social, and personal development. Arts activities have been shown to advance academic achievement and improve perceptions of self-worth while also providing creative outlets for children to develop into well-rounded and successful adults.

Every Club member is exposed to, and has the opportunity to engage in, a wide variety of arts-based activities, from music and dance to visual arts and creative writing. The Clubs have art centers where members can express themselves and develop new skills and talents.

Health and Life Skills

Through our Clubs, we offer a wide range of intervention and targeted prevention programs to help youth develop healthy self-esteem, resilience, motivation, and the ability to make healthy life choices. We have professional staff at each Club to coordinate prevention-oriented programming, identify and counsel youth in crisis, and to help connect families to appropriate services.

Through life skills programming, members have access to individual counseling, family support, conflict resolution and crisis intervention services, as well as group workshops, discussion groups, and field trips.

Education

At the Clubs, education activities reinforce and enhance the skills and knowledge that young people gain at school. We believe that all children can succeed academically and grow to be healthy, productive adults if given sufficient support and opportunities to learn. We offer homework assistance and tutoring; members have the opportunity to engage in one-on-one reading or receive help from a tutor.

The teen program focuses on college and career guidance, SAT and MCAS preparation, as well as educational speakers, college tours and field trips. We also offer classes and educational games to help members develop fundamental computer skills, and provide supervised Internet access and online tutoring to support school projects and daily homework.

By offering developmentally appropriate educational support and enrichment opportunities, we promote academic success and encourage members to think beyond their circumstances.

The Clubs’ technology programs work to help youth become “fluent” in the use of technology, giving members opportunities to increase their knowledge and hone their skills. Activities range from a general introduction to computers, including age-appropriate introductions to using the Internet and software utilities, to in-depth technology exploration and utilization for those with a special interest in technology.

Character and Leadership Development

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hancock County's character and leadership development programs empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image and good character, participate in the democratic process, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.

The nationally chartered Torch Club (for youth ages 8-12) and Keystone Club (for teens ages 13-18) provide members with opportunities to identify and respond to Club and community needs; design and develop their own programs and activities; and actively participate in the communities in which they live.

Every year, the Clubs select nominees for Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year program.
